Campaign Notebook: Murphy, McMahon Close in Poll

News and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

Second District

Joseph Courtney (D) today heralded the award of a $1.4 million grant to a Stafford Springs wool manufacturing company as an example of how the federal government can help keep manufacturing jobs in the U.S. “With cheap fabrics pouring in from overseas, it is critical that we support U.S. companies as they compete on a global stage,” Courtney said.

Fifth District

Andrew Roraback is using decade-old footage of a Cheshire public meeting where Elizabeth Esty told seniors they could move out of town if they don’t like the amount of taxes they’re paying due to a revaluation of property. The 30-second ad is titled “Move Out.”

Esty, who later served on the Town Council in Cheshire, said she advocated for seniors as an elected officials.

Senate

The latest Quinnipiac Poll shows Linda McMahon and Chris Murphy essentially tied in the U.S. Senate race. McMahon holds a 48-47 lead with a margin of error of 2.4 points.

Women back Murphy by six points and men back McMahon by seven points. McMahon’s supporters are much more enthusiastic. Half of McMahon’s backers are "very enthusiastic," while 39 percent are "somewhat enthusiastic."

For Murphy supporters, 27 percent are reportedly "very enthusiastic" and 55 percent are "somewhat enthusiastic."

Third District

At a press conference on Wednesday, Wayne Winsley accused Rosa DeLauro of ducking debates.

“The president of the United States has to debate his challenger, one on one, at least three times,” said Winsley, according to the New Haven Register. “Is the Congresswoman of the Third District of higher stature?”

DeLauro’s campaign manager said the congresswoman isn’t hiding.

“There is absolutely no ducking of Mr. Winsley. We are ready to debate, we are ready to do the forums,” Jimmy Tickey told the New Haven Register.

Fourth District

Jim Himes (D): Like many people, Himes seemed a little fatigued by the glut of pre-debate coverage before President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney squared off Wednesday night. Himes Tweeted:

The best thing about the debate tonight might be that it brings to a close the insane amount of pre-debate coverage. #enoughalready

Steve Obsitnik (R) stopped by Sacred Heart University and fielded questions from the students. A Twitter account for campaign volunteers shared this information:
