Ka-Ching! Ledyard Can Tax Mashantuckets' Leased Slot Machines

Ledyard reportedly will collect at least $500,000 in back taxes and penalties from the tribe.

A federal court has ruled that Ledyard can tax slot machines leased by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and used in the tribe's casino.

The U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals this week reversed a previous court decision barring the taxation. The district court found that the lower court erred in last year's ruling favoring the tribe. The district court found that federal law, including the Indian Gaming and Regulatory Act, allow states to tax non-tribal entities for leased property on tribal lands, The Day reports.

Ledyard Mayor John Rodolico told the paper that the town would look to collect approximately $500,000 in back taxes and penalties.

In addition, the decision will now allow Ledyard to receive approximately $300,000 a year in tax revenues from "non-tribal casino properties", according to The Day.
