Ledyard received a $40,000 federal grant to buy a new senior van, and better accommodate a growing need in town.

“The van program is increasing in popularity for sure,” said Lauren Rapp, the director of the . “More folks are losing their license and more folks are becoming ill.”

Rapp said the transportation service is used every day and $2 buys a round-trip ticket to a doctor’s office, the bank, the grocery store and/or other important destinations in and around Ledyard.

Right now, 25 percent of Ledyard residents are senior citizens, according to Rapp.

All of that has meant more people using senior services, and this grant will be able to replace one of Ledyard’s two senior vans. With the grant, Ledyard should purchase a new one within a year, said Rapp, who’s looking at a “2013 top of the line” model.

The grant requires some contribution from the town and Mayor John Rodolico said $12,000 is available for the purchase of the van.

Rapp said the van will replace the 2007 model and seat 14 people with two spots dedicated for wheelchairs. She said the new models will provide a smoother ride and the chair lift will be easier on the driver.
