State Layoffs Began Monday

More than 6,500 jobs are at stake.

State employee layoffs began on Monday and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy will consider deeper cuts to state agencies before the end of the week, according to CNN Money.

WFSB reported that  "large-scale" layoffs notices will likely be issued this week and that, in total, approximately 6,500 state workers will lose their jobs. The massive layoff is in an effort to balance the budget after unionized state employees rejected a concessions deal presented by the governor in June.

The deal was projected to save the state more than $1.6 billion dollars over two years and included a two-year wage freeze and new restrictions on pension and retirement benefits, according to the Connecticut Mirror. The proposal did guarantee no layoffs for four years.

The Connecticut Mirror reported that without the two-year deal, Malloy’s administration must submit a new plan to save the state $700.7 million this fiscal year and $901.2 million next fiscal year in order to balance the state’s two year $40.2 billion budget by the end of the week.
