Gales Ferry Student Wins Lieberman Scholarship

The former U.S. Senator created a scholarship with his leftover campaign contributions.

Ledyard residents who have contributed to Joe Lieberman’s political campaigns in the past need not worry about the leftovers going someplace far flung. The former senator created a scholarship with the leftover money and a Gales Ferry student was one of this year’s recipients

Qiuyin Ren, of Gales Ferry, who graduated last Saturday, was one of five recipients of the scholarship the former congressman created upon leaving office, according to WTNH News 8. 

According to the report, Washington politicians can give leftover political campaign contributions to either another campaign committee or to charity and Lieberman chose to create a scholarship.

According to scholarship’s website, scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, statement of career and educational goals and objectives, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.” 

The site says the scholarships equal $1,500.

WTNH News 8 said that more than 500 students applied for the scholarship. Lieberman said the scholarship presentation will become an annual event and he expects to give five scholarships a year from now on.
