Town Council to Hear School Renovation Update

The Ledyard Municipal Building Committee will present the school board's long-term vision for the district to the Town Council.

Consolidation and renovation are the key words for Ledyard school district but the specifics beyond that are hazy.

The Board of Education gained Town Council support this spring to renovate the seventh through eighth-grade middle school “as new” and add a wing for sixth graders but they later rescinded the plan once the cost came into question. That plan also required the closure of Ledyard Center School, which became a point of contention in the 11th hour.

Now they’re talking about renovating and consolidating in four phases, according to a report in The Day. The report says that the first phase is to renovate the middle school and add a wing for the sixth graders, like the original plan and the second phase is to consolidate the elementary schools from three to two.

The consolidation could come down in two ways, according to the report. Either Ledyard Center School would close and those students would be split up and sent to Gallup Hill School or Juliet W. Long School or Gallup Hill School will close and those students would be sent to Ledyard Center School or J.W. Long. And, both of those schools would require an extra wing to accommodate the extra students.

The third phase would be renovate J.W. Long School and the fourth phase is to renovate the high school. The Municipal Building Committee will make a presentation on these scenarios to Town Council Wednesday.
