Photo Gallery: First Day of School

It was a wet one after a longer-than-expected summer vacation.

It as a very wet first day of school in Ledyard Tuesday after summer vacation was extended nearly a week, courtesy of tropical storm Irene. Ledyard schools had been scheduled to reopen last Wednesday, Aug. 31, but they lost power when the storm hit and did not get it back until the end of the week. Monday, of course, was a holiday.

Here are some scenes from earlier this morning. I visited Gallup Hill School, stopped by the high school, then ran down to Gales Ferry.

There was a photo at Ledyard Center School this morning that I wasn't able to take.  It was of a mom kneeling on the walk in front of the school, taking a picture of her little boy, who stood proudly in his hooded raincoat, holding his lunch box. I was in traffic and there was no place to pull over. But I figured the description would do. We've all seen that picture before.
