PHOTOS: Second Graders Go Old School

A tour of the one-room schoolhouse on Geer Hill shows second graders the way things were not too long ago.

It's normal for Mr. Scarpa's second graders to review math, reading and writing during the school day but on this day, they left he comfort of their climate controlled school with white boards and modern plumbing and took their lessons in one of Ledyard's one-room school houses.

A tour of the one-room schoolhouse on Geer Hill had them working on penmanship, arithmetic and some old-fashioned games. Their tour guide, Mary Foltz, was full of information about the student life at the school but not because she did a bunch of historic research; Foltz said she attended the schoolhouse before Ledyard Center School was built in 1948.
