SHS Student Recipient of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship

Junior Jouval Mejias is one of the 2012 recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship

A press release from Stonington High School:

Senior Jouval Mejias was recently given a very pleasant surprise during his AP Psychology class.  Members of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee visited Jouval’s class to inform him that he was one of the recipients of the 2012 award.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship was developed shortly after Dr. King’s death to recognize African American students in Southeastern Connecticut who represent his ideals, character, and dedication to learning.  One of the first recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award was Lawrence Wilson Sr. (SHS ’70).  Over the years, 113 scholarships have been awarded, and the scholarship amount has grown to twenty thousand dollars, distributed in five thousand dollar installments over a four year-period while the student remains in college.  The selection process requires applicants to provide academic records, SAT scores, submit an essay and complete an interview with the selection committee.

Stonington High School is proud to announce that we have had three recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award in the past few years.  Prior to Jouval, Lawrence Wilson (’11) and Rayshawn Whitford (’08) received this prestigious award.  The Stonington High School administration and staff would like to congratulate Jouval for receiving this award.  He will be recognized at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Awards Dinner in October.

I am so proud of Jouval. I have watched Jouval grow up from a boy into a young man. Jouval has been a key part of a church family for years. I can't think of a more deserving recipient.
