Student Spotlight: Porter Reim

LHS Senior Is Top Student, Eagle Scout, Global Humanitarian

Ledyard High School senior Porter Reim was one of four Ledyard students who received awards last month from the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents. The CAPSS awards are given to students who are both outstanding scholars and make significant service contributions to their communities.

Porter’s award was presented by high school guidance counselor Josie Finayson. This is what she said about him:

“It truly is an honor to introduce one of the recipients of the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents Award. Porter Reim is a young man whose accomplishments make him stand out among his peers.

“Academically he ranks 11th in his class, having taken a challenging schedule of courses throughout high school. Noteworthy is the fact that Porter and his family moved across the country and back during high school and Porter was able to maintain this high standard of excellence.

“This year Porter is enrolled in AP/UConn English, AP Calculus and AP Physics and has earned High Honors.  Next semester, Porter will be taking a course at Connecticut College through the New London Scholars Program.

“As impressive as his academic accomplishments are, Porter’s commitment to service and his accomplishments in extracurricular activies are even more noteworthy.  At Ledyard High School his involvement has included Amnesty International, Cupcakes and Causes, and the National Honor Socity.

“The summer after his sophomore year, Porter worked in Paraguay with Amigos de las Americas, where he spent six weeks teaching lessons to youth about environmental conservation and health and sanitation. This past summer Porter went to Ecuador on a similar mission.

“Porter has been involved in scouting throughout his life and has distinguished himself by earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Less than 2 percent of the young men who enter scouting ever earn this rank. The fulfillment of his Eagle Scout project, which involved removing lead paint and re-painting the Rainbow Room, is a testament to Porter’s sense of dedication, ability to work with others and to work to achieve his goals.

“His involvement in these community service activities illustrates his generosity, leadership abilities and willingness to help others.

“Porter, congratulations on receiving this award.  I am sure that with your abilities and sense of dedication to serving the needs of your community we have only begun to see all you are capable of achieving.”
