Video: Dr. Graner Explains Changes in School Schedule

Board of Education to Vote on Proposed Changes Wednesday

Ledyard schools Superintendent Michael Graner had lunch with students at Ledyard Center School on Friday, and he asked the kids how they felt about giving up two or three holidays during the school year in order to get out on time in June.

They supported the plan overwhelmingly, Graner said.

So did the vast majority of some 90 parents who provided feedback on the proposal, made after the district lost three full days at the start of the school year due to tropical storm Irene.

“They not only supported the plan, but they were very grateful for the opportunity to provide feedback,” Graner said.

Ledyard schools normally take off the day before Thanksgiving, to help students, teachers and their families with travel plans. The district also likes to take off the day before Christmas Eve, and this year had planned a four-day weekend around Presidents Day in February.

As a result of the storm, a modified schedule has been proposed that would include a half-day of school on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a half-day on the Friday before Christmas Eve, and a full day on the Tuesday after Presidents Day.

The Board of Education will vote on the revised schedule at its regular meeting on Wednesday, beginning at 7 p.m. in the high school media center.
