Ready? Get Set. Play Ball!

Today is opening day in Ledyard for Little League, baseball, softball and soccer.

Today marks the beginning of the days that grow long and hot and quiet while you pass the time in some field somewhere in Ledyard cheering on your kids, your family members and your friends' kids. It's Opening Day for little league, baseball, softball and soccer today and fields everywhere will be filled with children and adults of varying ages kicking and throwing balls in one direction and then the other and chasing after them.

It is the day Don Grise, Director of Ledyard Parks and Recreation has been waiting for.

"It's going to be a very busy day," he said.

Grise manages all the fields in Ledyard and by his accounting there are "a lot." A bunch of fields have been improved this spring in anticipation of the summer sports. Most notably, the fields at the Middle School have been fenced in so that softball can be included in Little League. (By the way that huge backstop in the far corner will be taken down sometime this summer and, in thinking ahead to winter, there will be no more fence to crash into while sledding!)

And there have been some new ball fields installed. The field by the cemetery on Route 214 has a new field for youth baseball and the existing field got some new dug outs and fencing.

Anyway, there have been some nice changes in Ledyard's parks and starting today, you have many reasons to enjoy them.
