Stonington Recreation has added flag football to this year's programs, and Ledyard players are invited to join the fun!

Stonington's recreation administrator Joe Mendonca is pretty excited about the new program.

“I think it’s another great opportunity to offer to our residents and it’s an opportunity for kids in town to have a fun safe environment,” Mendonca said. “It’s a matter of getting them involved and getting them moving and developing team building skills and interpersonal skills.”

The league is open to boys and girls ages 7-14 from Stonington and surrounding towns. It’s the only football program in town that is open to both boys and girls in that age range.

Mendonca said the program is an alternative or supplement to the tackle football league in town and, since it’s run from a recreation standpoint, it’s a little less competitive. Patch reported on the proposal in March and asked users if they’d like to see a flag football option in town; users gave a resounding yes.

The league will practice one or two times a week at the Dean’s Mill School and games will be held on Saturdays at the Pawcatuck Middle School. Mendonca said that depending on the number of participants, he may divide the teams up by age.

Registration is Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mystic River Park (in conjunction with Family Movie Night, which will be Goonies) If there’s rain and the movie is canceled, people can register at Stonington Human Services at 166 South Broad Street instead. Stonington residents can register for $55, non-residents can register for $75.
