Time to Get Back in the Saddle Again

Good Weather for 17th Agri-Science/FFA Horse Show at Fairgrounds

“I am living the dream today,” said June Mattson of Gales Ferry, wearing a big smile, standing beside her partner and confidant Daisy Duke, who nuzzled her gently for reassurance. It was an anniversary for the team, who competed for the first time three years ago at this very show, the Ledyard Regional Agri-Science, Future Farmers of America Open Horse Show. The two were more than happy to be commemorating their first competition.

For many other riders, this end of April horse show, held at the Ledyard Fair Grounds, traditionally marks getting back in the saddle again for the start of another season of competing. More than 70 horses traveled to the 17th annual show and were delighted to “do their thing” enjoying the seasonable weather; not too hot, not to cold, with pockets of much appreciated sunshine.

“We have been phenomenally lucky with weather for this show over the past few years,” said six-year veteran, agri-science teacher Mark Grillo, who acts as the student advisor for the annual show.

Horses and riders alike were visibly excited to be out, back in the ring again for some friendly competition, in pursuit of a good time and some blue ribbons.  The show, just one of the many fundraisers the agri-science program holds each year, raised a little over $3,400. According to Grillo, all proceeds will go to support agri-science/ Future Farmers of America leadership programs.

“I think it was a great day and everyone had a very good time,” said Grillo, who is passionate about this event.

He adds, “The important thing is the kids got to come out and have a wonderful day of riding. This show is not just a great fund raiser, but it is an opportunity for the students to work together co-operatively, to plan an event and to gain some ‘hands on’ experience. Each year we all strive to make this show even better than the year before and this year is no exception. I think everyone did a great job and a lot of thanks goes to the ag-booster parents who really give us a lot of support for all our events.”

Kayleigh Evon and her 19-year-old mare, Beauty High, never miss the show and said it is their favorite of the year.

Mattson and Daisy Duke vow to keep coming back until they just can’t do it anymore. “We love this show and we’ll be here next year!”
