End of an Era

Never thought I would see the day our Love in the Afternoon would become game show, reality show, and Katie Couric show in the afternoon.

I will never forget where I was when I heard the news; All My Children and One Life to Live being canceled. I was sitting on Facebook, and it was someone’s status. All I kept thinking was Erica Kane DONE! Vickie Lord DONE! So sad, but hey, my favorite soap opera was and is General Hospital so I was OK.

Little did I know my ever-loving General Hospital soul was in the hands of Katie Couric! So now they cancel General Hospital for Katie? Oh, say it’s not so! (Well it’s rumored to be so.) It’s so!!

General Hospital has truly been a part of my life since I was in Junior High School, sure I didn’t watch it all the time, I had my boycotting moments, but for the most part I watched. I can even sing to you word-for-word (no looking up lyrics, honestly) the whole song of General Hospitale! I could remember watching soap operas with my mom when I was a little girl, and now that whole era is coming to an end, for reality shows, talk shows and game shows. I wonder what will replace those reality shows, talk shows and game shows when their time is done.

General Hospital has had many great storylines, sometimes it had its bad writing moments, but for the most part it did just fine. I mean, can a true General Hospital fan forget "Luke and Laura’s Wedding," "The death of BJ," "The death of Stone," "The AIDS ball," "The death of Lila" when actress Anna Lee died, "Casey the Alien," "The Mob," or "Pizza with the Quartermaine’s on Thanksgiving?"

We watched Kim McCullough's Robin grow up on this show.  How about all the wonderful villains that we all loved to hate: The Jeromes, The Cassidines, Heather Webber, Cesar Faison, Ryan Chamberlain, Frank Smith, Lisa Niles,  Robert "Franco" Frankis. Can we ever forget those bad girls gone good: Lucy, Bobbie -- and those bad guys gone good; Luke, Sonny?

Or how about the two most beloved nurses, Jessie  Brewer and Amy Vinning, played respectivly by the now departed Emily McLaughlin and Shell Kepler? Those wonderful super couples that we all still love even though most are gone: Luke and Laura, Noah and Bobbie, Felicia and Frisco, Anna and Robert, Kevin and Lucy, Sonny and Brenda, Robin and Stone and Liz and Lucky. Our core families -- The Webbers, The Hardys and The Quartermaines.

Also, a lot of stars came out of General Hospital: Demi Moore, John Stamos, Elizabeth Taylor, Ricky Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Kristin Davis. There are so many more memories I have that I just don’t have enough time or space to write, but feel free to write your favorite on the comment line.

I hope the writers end this show with dignity and do it justice, and I sure hope Katie’s news show is just as good as General Hospital. Until my next blog, have a wonderful week.
