Two Navy Men Charged With Making Bombs

Both were released from custody and will next appear in court July 29.

Ledyard and State Police and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service charged two Navy men on Saturday with possession of explosives and bomb manufacturing.

According to a release from Ledyard Police, an officer on patrol on Saturday night checked out a car that was parked in a hiking area off of Avery Hill Road, and "discovered a small amount of explosive material."  

"Subsequent investigation led Officers to a storage facility in the Gales Ferry section of Ledyard where a larger amount of materials were discovered," the release said.

The Day reports that the following materials were seized: 

  • Volumes 1, 2 and 3 of a handbook called Improvised Munitions.
  • Nearly 15 pounds of ammonium nitrate
  • More than two pounds of aluminum powder
  • Potassium perchlorate
  • Thermite
  • A scale
  • One roll of magnesium ribbon
  • Hobby fuse
  • Numerous fireworks

Charged were:

John Mallow (DOB 04/23/1991), with the address of the Submarine Base in Groton, charged with possession of explosives, manufacture of bombs, and possession of fireworks. He was held on a $50,000 bond and appeared at GA 10 in New London on Monday. He was released from custody and his next court date is July 29.

Gary Braun (DOB 05/25/1994), with the address of the Submarine Base in Groton, charged with possession of explosives and possession of fireworks. He was held on a $10,000 bond and appeared at GA 10 in New London on Monday. He was released from custody and his next court date is July 29.
