This May, voters will be asked to vote on a $6.7 million dollar construction project that will house the 20-21 person police force and Thursday, Ledyard Police Lt. Michael Finkelstein offered up the current police station to residents who are interested to see the building and decide for themselves if the building should be replaced.

Finkelstein said they moved into the building in 1995 after the town bought it for a good price. He said the building was adequate and an enormous improvement from their previous headquarters in the Town Hall Annex but now the building is showing a signs of age.

"The infrastructure wasn't intended for the use it gets now," he said.

Finkelstein said the building has the following issues:

  • significant failures in heating, cooling and ducts
  • flooding of rain water and sewage back ups
  • there are issues with mold in the walls

Finkelstein said if the new building is approved by voters, he's looking forward a sufficient heating and cooling system, increased evidence processing and storage areas, cohesive and secure records storage,

"It's a shoehorn right now," he said of the cramped building. "We're using it the best that we can."

The Ledyard Police Department is located at 11 Lorenz Parkway and there is another tour for the public on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
