Town Celebrates Annual Harvard-Yale Regatta With Saturday Events

You can watch the Harvard-Yale Regatta this Sunday in Gales Ferry.

The annual Harvard-Yale Regatta is a long lasting local tradition and is seeing a revival of interest in the area. This year’s boat race takes place on Sunday, June 9 and the Gales Ferry Community Center is doing its part in adding to the tradition by offering a few community events on what's now being called Regatta Eve, Saturday, June 8.

  1. 5 p.m. picnic
  2. 6 p.m. presentation by Town Historian Kit Foster, “A History of the Yale-Harvard Regatta”
  3. And, happening all evening are rowing demonstrations by the Noank Ledyard Rowing Clubs; residents can meet and greet adaptive rowing coach Corrine Houle; there’s a book signing of “A History of Collegiate Rowing in America,” by Daniella Garran; and artist Carol A. Watson will be on site to talk about her exhibit “Expressions in Texture: Horses, Feathers and More.”
People wanting to see the boat race are welcome to stop in at either boathouse. The Harvard Boathouse is located on the river off Military Highway and the Yale Boathouse is at 4 Riverside Place. People also gather at Riverside Park in New London to watch the race.

According to the Riverside Park Conservency’s website, the "race was first contested in 1852 and the Regatta is America's oldest collegiate athletic competition. The race has been rowed on the Thames River in New London, Connecticut, on all but 5 occasions since 1878."

The website says that originally the race was just between the varsity crews but things changed. On Sunday we'll see the 2 mile freshman race, the 3 mile junior varsity and the 4 mile varsity race.

The Riverside Park Conservancy will host a Celebration in the Park after the races, which are scheduled to begin at 9am.
