First Step Of L&M's “Large Medical Complex” Submitted

Plans Submitted For Cancer Treatment Center

Plans for the first step of what could be a massive medical center were submitted this month by Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, Town Planner Mark Wujtewicz reported Wednesday night to the Economic Development Commission.

The plans show a 45,000-square-foot, two-story cancer treatment center on about six acres at 475 Boston Post Road, Wujtewicz said. Overall, the property is 100.3 acres, according to the deed.

This is the first part of what should be a larger project, Wujtewicz said. Hospital officials were discussing building multiple health centers, and even residential buildings, covering the entire 100 acres, he said.

The building's access will be off of Parkway South, he said. The property also borders Boston Post Road.

On April 26, 2010, the planning and zoning commission unanimously approved a request by READCO LLC, on behalf of L & M, for a zoning change to accommodate a “large medical campus,” according to commission meeting minutes.

, L & M officially bought the property from Waterford-New London Realty Associates for $5.5 million. At the time, L & M officials did not comment on what they planned to build.

What Happens Now

The application is being reviewed by the planning and zoning department. Additionally, other departments such as police and fire will look at the plans, Wujtewicz said.

Then, the plan will go to the planning and zoning commission for approval, Wujtewicz said.

The building does not have any overnight rooms for patients, Wujtewicz said.
