Five Things: Budget Forum Tonight

Bobcat Sighting, Rotary Speech Finalist, Photos?

  1. Periods of rain and freezing rain early today, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. High 51F. Winds SW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent. Tonight partly cloudy skies. Low 42F.
  2. Tonight at 7 p.m. the Ledyard Board of Education will conduct a public forum on the proposed $29.6 million school budget for 2012-13. The meeting will be in the high school media center. Schools superintendent Dr. Michael Graner has cautioned that a nearly $1 million shortfall this year could result in the elimination of up to nine positions, including seven teachers.
  3. Claire Brennan and Sara DiBiasi thought they spotted a deer in a field by Town Farm and Shewville Roads. OK, the photos aren't the clearest (see: Loch Ness), but that is no deer out there. What do you think?
  4. Ledyard High School junior Kim Codding competed this month in the regional Rotary Four-Way Speech Contest and is now a top-three finalist. In a note to English teacher and speech coach Barbara Park, she writes, “After competing in a giant college room (scary! College! Ah!) against 11 really awesome competitors (and I mean it, one of them made me want to cry and another was so clever... Such a great experience), I think you will be happy to hear that my little Ledyardite speech on politics made it to top three!” Her speech addressed constitutional rights as Americans, particularly the right of free speech. She asserted that rights for which many bled and died may at times appear to exist more in word than in deed. Way to Go Kim!
  5. We’re still hoping for some cool photos that demonstrate your supreme allegiance to your favorite Super Bowl team. Debra Basaldua has the right idea. C'mon, people! It's the Patriots and the Giants!
