Five Things to Know Today

BoE Budget, Forensic Lecture, Story Time, Spaghetti Sauce Contest

  1. Gov. Malloy pledged Wednesday to continue funding ECS grants to state towns and cities, and with that assurance the Ledyard Board of Education unanimously approved a $29.6 budget plan for 2011-12. 
  2. Groton Mayor James Streeter, a former Connecticut State Forensic Laboratory document examiner, will discuss forgery and other questioned documents at a forensic lecture tonight, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the United Way of SE CT on Route 12 at Stoddard’s Wharf Road. The event is sponsored by i5 Teaching Network. For more information, call 860-287-7400.
  3. Ledyard Children’s Librarian Nancy Brewer will lead Winter Story Time for 4-6-year-olds today at 1 p.m. at Bill Library. Nancy does a remarkable job bringing children’s books to life. Her story time will be the subject of a photo gallery next Tuesday in Patch. Watch for it. 
  4. From discounted Valentine’s Day candy to $2 reams of printer paper at Staples, Five Great Deals is a deal you don’t want to miss. Ditto for The Garde Arts Center's annual film festival, now through Feb. 26, featuring Oscar-nominated films like The Social Network, How to Train Your Dragon and The Kids are Alright. With $30 passes, that's $3 per movie! 
  5. It’s not too early to tell you about the Spaghetti Sauce Contest this Sunday afternoon, Feb. 20, at in Gales Ferry. All bar patrons will vote on which sauce is the best. Raya’s will supply the pasta. This is the time of year that people need spaghetti sauce contests. The fun begins at 1:30 p.m.
