Five Things to Know Today

Jazzercisers Donate Food, Huskies Win Again, LHS Football Hall, Japan Benefit

  1. Fortunately Thursday’s snow was gone by early afternoon. Except for a few afternoon clouds, today will be mostly sunny and cool, high 41F. Winds WNW at 10 to 20 mph. Partly cloudy tonight, low near 25F, and it looks like a fairly nice weekend in store.
  2. Lisa Mazzaro and members of her Jazzercise class donated several boxes of food to the Ledyard Social Services Thursday. During a recent one-year celebration Mazzaro said she cooked and her students brought non-perishables to donate to the food pantry. The effort is but one piece in a county-wide effort to combat hunger in the region.
  3. The UConn Huskies men’s basketball team won its eighth straight Thursday, defeating the San Diego State Aztecs in the Round of 16 to advance to the Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament’s West Regional. The Huskies can punch their ticket to a third Final Four in seven years with a win on Saturday against Arizona.
  4. Ledyard High School has had its share of athletic success over the years, especially on the gridiron. Next year its many prizes and accolades will be put on display at a Ledyard High School Football Hall of Fame.
  5. A fund-raiser tonight at Hanafin’s Irish Pub in New London will be a little out of the ordinary. It’s a concert by Local Gravy, with special drinks and a $7 door fee, all to raise money to help the people in Japan affected by the earthquake and tsunami.
