Five Things to Know Today

Land Sale is Approved, Budget Passes Council, Naming Bess Eaton, Mr. Collins

  1. Mostly cloudy skies early today, then partly cloudy this afternoon. High 61F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph. Tonight partly cloudy skies. Low 41F.
  2. Town voters approved the sale of a portion of the former Gales Ferry School property Wednesday. The sale clears the way for a new CVS pharmacy in Gales Ferry, although the developer must still obtain zoning approval and all the necessary permits.
  3. A $49 million town budget proposal was approved Wednesday. A public hearing on the plan will be on April 25. The annual Town Meeting will be May 16, and the referendum will follow on May 17.
  4. There seems to be a difference of opinion about how the Bess Eaton coffee and donut shop got its name. Pretty good chance Jeff and Ron don’t know, either.
  5. If you happened to notice that Mayor Allyn was not at the town meeting on the former Gales Ferry School property on Wednesday, it could be he was at rehearsal. The mayor is playing the clergyman Collins in the musical version of Pride and Prejudice, which opens Friday at Three Rivers Community College.
