Five Things to Know Today

Coffee Shop, School Schedule, CVS Hearing, So Long Summer

  1. Rain showers in the morning giving way to thundershowers in the afternoon. High 73F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain is 60 percent. Cloudy tonight with occasional showers. Low 66F. 
  2. A national coffee shop chain wants to locate on the site of the old firehouse in Ledyard Center. Could be just the shot in the arm Ledyard Center needs.
  3. The school board on Wednesday approved a revised school schedule for 2011. Students will attend school for a half-day on Wednesday, Nov. 23, and also Friday, Dec. 23. They will return from Presidents Day Weekend on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
  4. The Zoning Commission will conduct a public hearing tonight on the CVS proposal. The pharmacy chain is planning to build a store on the former Gales Ferry School property on Route 12, across from Ocean State Job Lot.
  5. Today is the last day of summer. Soon we will be turning on the furnace again and settling in for the long, cold months ahead. But before we do that we have this one last day to reflect on those warm, wonderful days we have just enjoyed, and to bid a fond farewell to another grand summer season.
