Five Things: Morgan Pond Hike Saturday

Gales Ferry Holiday Social, Craft Fair, Big Football Weekend

  1. Mostly sunny today. High 52F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Another beauty.
  2. The Tri-Town Trail Committee and the Town of Ledyard Parks and Recreation Department will conduct a guided hike of the Groton Utilities Reservoir property in Ledyard on Saturday, Dec. 3. The hike starts at 10 a.m.  Meet at the Groton Utilities overlook parking area on the North side of Sandy Hollow Road in Ledyard, Come early and carpool if possible as parking is limited. The hike will follow rolling terrain around Morgan Pond, about 3 miles.
  3. A Holiday Craft Fair and Basket Bash will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry. All proceeds will be donated to the local U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots Program; raffle tickets for the baskets will be available with the following donation levels: $1 per ticket; 7 tickets for $5; 15 tickets for $10; bring a new toy for the Toys for Tots Collection Bin and receive a bonus raffle ticket (max 2 pp); (323) 244-5754.   4. The Gales Ferry District will host an Open House and Community Holiday Social tonight, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., featuring the Ledyard High School Carolers at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome for an evening of socializing with neighbors, admiring the newly renovated Community Center, and listening to amazing live music. Drinks, snacks, and desserts will be provided, so bring the entire family to kick off the holiday season with an evening of fun and entertainment.
  5. Big football weekend. First, on Saturday at Middletown High School, beginning at 2 p.m., the Colonels vs. the Eagles of Wolcott High in a state semifinal game. A fan bus will leave Ledyard High School at 12:30 p.m. Saturday for  Middletown. The cost is $5 per person, but riders must call LHS at 860 464-9600 by Friday to sign up. Also on Saturday, the UConn Huskies visit Cincinnati. UConn becomes bowl-elegible with a win. Then on Sunday, the Patriots host Indianapolis. Starting in the Colts’ backfield: running back Donald Brown and quarterback Dan Orlovsky, both former UConn standouts.
