Malloy To Tour Ledyard Wednesday

Vast Majority of Town Still Without Electricity

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is planning to stop in Ledyard Wednesday for a one-hour tour of storm damage in the town. The tour will begin at Town Hall at 2:30 p.m.

Ledyard Mayor Fred B. Allyn Jr. said the governor will be in Pomfret and Sprague before coming to Ledyard.

As of 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, some 93 percent of Ledyard households still were without power, according to CL&P, and 24 road obstructions involving downed wires still had not been cleared.

“We were virtually at 100 percent,” Allyn said of the residents and businesses in town without power after Hurricane Irene, “but I know some have since had their power restored.”

Clearing the roads has been painstaking because all of the remaining obstructions involved downed wires, requiring the assistance of CL&P. The power company has been spread thin since the storm on Sunday.

As of Tuesday evening, power had yet to be restored to town hall, the high school or the senior center, among other town buildings. Town Hall was closed Monday and Tuesday, and schools are not scheduled to reopen until Tuesday, Sept. 6.
