Wind Advisory Issued for New London County, Winter Weather Elsewhere

High winds may down trees in Ledyard, a storm is expected to drop snow and ice on interior regions parts of the state.

 

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook and wind advisory for northern New London County starting at 4 p.m. today.

A wind advisory is issued when sustaind winds of 31 to 39 mph are expected; the strongest of such winds will blow through New Londond county beginning tonight.

"Winds of this magnitude could down a few trees and limbs, power lines and holiday decorations," said the agency. "Scattered power outages will be possible and driving high profile vehicles will be difficult."

For those heading to or from other parts of the state, a winter weather advisory was issued for the interior regions of Connecticut and New England.

"Any snow or ice would make driving and walking difficult," the National Weather Service reported on Wednesday morning. "When temperatures are below freezing, motorists need to be especially careful on bridges and overpasses where slippery spots can easily develop."

Those traveling for the holiday should be extremely cautious if heading north. Accumulations in Massachusetts and Northern New England could be significantly more — up to 16 inches in spots — the weather service said.

This week's weather forecast for Ledyard:

  • This Afternoon A chance of snow and sleet between 3pm and 4pm, then rain, snow, and sleet likely. Cloudy, with a high near 39. East wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
  • Tonight Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Temperature rising to around 45 by 5am. Windy, with a east wind 24 to 31 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
  • Thursday Rain, mainly before 3pm. High near 49. Breezy, with a east wind 15 to 20 mph becoming northeast 9 to 14 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Thursday Night A chance of rain before midnight. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 30. Northwest wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Friday Sunny, with a high near 38. Northwest wind 9 to 13 mph.
  • Friday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 20.
  • Saturday Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35.
  • Saturday Night A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 24. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
  • Sunday A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
  • Sunday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 18.
