Kids ask the darndest things...

"What does a Ledyard Animal Control Officer do!?"

Sometimes we are asked to speak with children about what we do here at Ledyard Animal Control.

I open our talk by asking this question: "What do you think an Animal Control Officer does?"

Kid 1: "You catch dogs and bring 'em to jail?"

I reply, "We rescue dogs from roaming the streets so they aren't hit by a car or taken by 'bad' people, and we take bring to our kennel where they are safe and warm and fed well. Then we try to find their families or find them new ones."

Kid 2: "You control animals?"

"We do help to 'control' animals that are injured, sick, or scared. We protect our residents and you from being hurt by such an animal."

Kid 3 : "You are mean to dogs and kill them!"

"I am not sure where you heard this?"

Kid 3:" My grandpa said you shot his dog when he was 6."

"Oh, I know it wasn't us that did that, but I am sad it happened to him." Oh my how do you answer that sort of thing?!

Kid 4: "Oh you are like the Humane Society!"

"NOPE! NOT even for a minute!"

Kid 5: "You like animals?"

"Yes I do, and people too! Working with people is 95% of our job."

Kid 6: "Ummm, ummm, do you, I don't know, ummm, dress animals up? My Mommy does?!"

"Yes we do! For two reasons: first, to keep an animal warm, or for fun to help them get adopted."

We hope through this blog everyone gets to know us a bit better and stops by to see what we do.
