Driver Charged After One Car Accident

A portion of Long Cove Road will be closed for most of the day.

A portion of Long Cove Road is closed between Christy Hill Road and Washington Drive after a car crashed into it early Saturday morning, according to Ledyard Police Lt. Michael Finkelstein.

The utility pole has to be replaced and police have not given an estimated timeframe for when the road will open, he said.

Emergency responders found a 2004 Lincoln which had struck the pole, causing it and the attached live wires to fall. The operator evaded the scene but based upon police investigation, officers from the Ledyard Police Department located and charged the vehicle operator, said Finkelstein.

Igor Ponts, 27, of 197 Laurel Hill Avenue in Norwich, was arrested and charged with evading responsibility, operating without a license and operating without insurance.

According to the Hartford Courant, 15 percent of CL&P customers in the area to lose power. Power was restored to residents throughout the day.
