Plans for New Police Station Coming Right Up

Town sets Aug. 30 deadline to receive proposals from architects and engineers to design the new police department complex.

The town has set Aug. 30 as the deadline to receive sealed bids from architects and engineers to begin the design phase of the new police department complex on Col. Ledyard Highway.

Sixteen architectural and engineering firms attended a "pre-proposal" meeting on Aug. 1 in Town Hall to learn more about the project, which was approved by voters in the spring at referendum.

The Town of Ledyard is seeking qualifications and proposals from qualified architectural and engineering firms or teams of architectural and engineering firms to provide complete design services with respect to the Town’s desire to construct  a new Police Station and related site improvements at 737 and 741 Colonel Ledyard Highway, and to provide construction oversight and consulting services in conjunction with a Construction Manager as advisor. The project also involves demolition of several buildings and parking lot, utility and site improvements at the Town Hall complex and surrounding area. The RFQ/RFP may be obtained online at http://www.ledyardct.org/pd or in person at the Ledyard Town Hall, Mayor’s Office, 741 Colonel Ledyard Hwy., Ledyard, CT 06339
Sealed proposals will be accepted until 2 p.m., Aug. 30.

In May, voters approved a proposal for a $6.4 million new police station to replace the facility on Lorenz Parkway. The new station would be built on 1 acre at 737 Col. Ledyard Highway, next door to Town Hall. The property is already owned by the town.

The new station will have:

  • public areas that include an interview room and lobby;
  • a training classroom;
  • communications/dispatch center;
  • administrative offices;
  • records room;
  • traffic office;
  • youth/D.A.R.E./School Resource Officer office;
  • detective office;
  • two interview rooms;
  • area for the patrol division including locker room, lunch room and a gym;
  • a sally port, prisoner processing area, and detention cells
  • area for processing and storing evidence

The two-level building will have a total of 12,000 square feet. Actual construction is expected to cost around $5 million, with another $870,000 to furnish and outfit the building, and $500,000 budgeted for contingency.

Preliminary plans were drawn up by Jucunski Humes Architects of Berlin.
