VIDEO: Sea Schoolers Participate In Baby Seal Release

Meet Ares, the Harbor Seal released by Mystic Aquarium rescue team and students from the Sea School.

When the Mystic Aquarium released Ares, a 4-month-old baby harbor seal into the ocean three weeks ago, his send-off committee included children in the Aquarium’s Sea School.

The children, ages 3 to 5, spent several weeks learning about the Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue team, which rescues and releases marine animals like Ares.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources rescued the abandoned harbor seal pup on July 2, 2011. Ares, according to the Mystic Aquarium, was transferred to the University of New England and then transferred to the Mystic Aquarium’s Seal Rescue Clinic for rehabilitation.

The Mystic Aquarium’s animal rescue team gave Ares a clean bill of health, clearing the way for him to be released at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, R.I. on Oct. 11 at 9:30 a.m.
